The women's revolution is all encompassing -- from politics to science, from the board room to the studio. No space is safe. Women around the world are waking up and realizing their power. All industries are at risk of take over. Because of this, it is no surprise to me that women are entering the rap game, with audiences thoroughly embracing their style, their stories, and their flow.
This inaugural #womencrushremix is a love letter to women rap artists, both old and new. In particular, this is an ode to women rap artists that are reclaiming the spaces and the messages that traditionally, male rap artists have occupied. For the past few decades, male rap artists have dictated how women twerk, dance, date, love, everything. The female voices I have compiled in this mix speak to ownership of their sexuality and their own entrepreneurship -- and maybe sometimes the line between the two is blurred. These voices are honest and at times flawed, but all around their energy and their presence is relatable.
The other clear influence in this mix is a sense of place -- the American South. With the exception of Kash Doll, Cardi B, and Nicki Minaj, these women artists hail from the South, Miami, Texas, Atlanta. And even if they might not be from the South, the presence is there -- Nicki Minaj references Atlanta in "Beez In The Trap," and Cardi B is signed to Atlanta-based Quality Control Music. The production of these songs, "Where The Bag At," "No Limit," "Twerk," and "Hot Girl" is heavily influenced by Mannie Fresh's Cash Money sound toward the end.
